Show Music Status in Gtalk
I’d been wondering for days, how does the Music Status Sharing work. Supposedly, I can start sharing to my Gtalk friends the title of the songs I am listening to after enabling the feature in my Gtalk Settings. However, after enabling it, I still did not see in Gtalk the songs that were played in my Windows Media Player.
(To enable the feature, I went to ‘Settings’, located at the top right corner of my Gtalk. In the pop-up window, I clicked ‘Audio’ and checked the box for ‘Share music listening history with Google Music Trends.’)
So yesterday, I googled again what to do with this feature and found this post that showed more steps on activating it. So if you were also wondering like me, here are the additional steps for Windows Media Player:
- Open Windows Media Player.
- In the toolbar go to Tools > Plug-ins > Options
- In the Plug-ins tab, select Background among the categories listed.
- Check the box for Google Talk Music Plugin
- Click OK.
- Then click the ‘Show current music track’ status in your Gtalk.
Once you are done with these steps. You will see on your status the title of the song you are listening to, as well as the singer’s name, if available. Your listening history will also be shared with Google Music Trends.
Unlike Windows Media Player, Music Status Sharing feature automatically works with iTunes, old versions of Winamp, or Yahoo Music Engine. I learned this after installing these music players in my computer.
Download links:
- Windows Media Player 10
- iTunes
- Winamp old versions (Gtalk freezes after enabling music status with Winamp 5.51.)
- Yahoo Music Jukebox (formerly known as Yahoo Music Engine)

Thanks soo much … dat was great help !!
this is for vista! INSTALLING GTALK AND MEDIA PLAYER DISPLAYING THE TRACKS.
all you have to do is right click your gtalk installer. before that close both your media player and gtalk, it doesnt matter if you installing the same version. instead of clicking on install, you RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. wait a little, open you gtalk, choose to show current track, run your windows media player and play a track, now the media file`s name should be displayed.
cheers.
Thank you Dayananda. The info working fine for me…thansk alot
what if im listening to songs online,and i wnt to show them on the status bar?i tried all the above options but its not getting displayed,y is it so?
Hi anagha,
It’s almost a year since I wrote this article. Only a few days ago I tried to use the show current music track again. It was working in my Windows Media Player. I don’t have other music players installed in my computer so I can’t answer your question.
But I remember that when I did write this article, I tried the feature first on other media players (i installed them before) and I know it worked. Probably, some settings have changed on the recent versions of music player you are using that I am not aware of.
In case,even after installing as per the procedure(Installing in Administrator mode)if the “Show current track” is not showing up,clean up the registry.
Follow the procedure:
1.click Start->Run
2.Type ‘regedit’. (without single quotes)
3.Click Edit->Find
4.Type ‘google talk’.(Without single quotes)
5.Delete all the search result values displayed(DELETE ONLY THOSE VALUES WHICH VE GOOGLE TALK).
6.Press F3 to display the next search result.Delete the values selected, as said above.
7.Now reinstall GTalk in Admin mode.
you will see “Show Current Track”
