Search Images with Google Swirl
Google has finally launched a new feature called Google Image Swirl. It is a fun way of finding images in which it builds on new computer vision research to cluster similar images into representative groups. If you are bored with the same old sight as you search for pictures either for your personal or business use, this is definitely a refined way of exploring search results.
Try searching for landmarks like the “Louvre”. You will see 12 image thumbnails of the Louvre Museum, including daytime or nighttime photos, images of people inside the museum, and different pictures related to the Louvre museum. Then, when you select one image from the 12 thumbnails, you can see cluster of images in a swirl view.
The look may be similar to Google Wonder Wheel which is available in the Search options panel which enables you to explore related search queries. But, image Swirl expands on technologies developed for Similar Images and Picasa Face Recognition which distinguishes the grouping of images and builds hierarchies out of these clusters.
You can now do some experimental search in Google Labs today. I have tried it myself and I was amazed of how fun and easy it is to explore different images.
