The Effects of Universal Search from Google on SEO

Google has currently been assimilating a new universal search platform, which raises issues on the effect on SEO.

Google is attempting to integrate the different verticals through universal search. Rather than employ an algorithm so it can arrange rankings, Google is endeavoring to sort the rankings as well as other listings such as video and book listings. Everyone, including the people at Google, know that this is a difficult task to undertake.

Sites which are attempting to secure the traditional organic rankings will find that they will have to appear in the three or four leading rankings so they can be placed on the first page of search results. This is because the search page will be occupied by other information. Still, universal search may prove beneficial for many sites.

Sites will have to rely on a more global perspective in marketing, rather than stick to a niche like SEO or PPC forever. Marketing efforts will have to be adaptable to all kinds of platforms so they can be adaptable to video advertising. This is important for sites that want to be the target of the large amounts of traffic being raised by Google.

SEO will still be useful on Google though. This is because Google lacks the content required to eliminate the need for organic listings on every search. Majority of keyword phrases will probably not be affected. Thus SEO marketers should use more tail keyword phrases.

Some critics believe that Google is attempting to introduce universal search too early, even if Google succeeds at eliminating Yahoo and MSN. At the same time, Google might not be able to facilitate searches properly. Consumers might not appreciate video and book listings accompanying their regular searches, especially if the listings are not immediately related to their search.
