____________

If you are using Internet Explorer with the latest Google Toolbar.

All you have to do is look for the wrench, which is the toolbar options panel. The wrench is located at the right corner of the google toolbar.

  • Click the wrench, (the blue one beside the square button) and a new window will appear.
  • Uncheck the ‘Suggest searches as you type’.
  • Then click save.

____________

If you are using Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar, these are the steps to disable the feature:

  • Click the settings button on the right of the toolbar.
  • Then go to Options.
  • Click the ‘Search Box Settings’ button, which is on top of all the buttons on the window that will appear.
  • Uncheck ‘Suggest Popular Searches’ to disable the instant suggestion feature.
  • You can also uncheck ‘Suggest searches from my search history’ if you really don’t want Google to suggest whenever you type on that search box.
  • Click the OK buttons.

From Toolbar Firefox Help Center: ( I added this on April 6, 2008)

Please note that Google Suggest is separate from the Toolbar’s drop-down search history feature. If you’d like to clear your search history automatically when you exit Firefox, simply follow the instructions above, and un-check the box next to “Save the search history across browser sessions.”

To entirely disable the Toolbar’s drop-down search history, please visit http://www.google.com/support/firefox/bin/answer.py?answer=45143 for detailed instructions.

____________

If you are using Firefox without the toolbar, you can also disable this feature.

  • Click the Google button on the left of the search box on Firefox.
  • Click ‘Manage Search Engines’
  • Uncheck the ‘Show search suggestions’.
  • Then click OK.

  4. I don’t have Google Toolbar. I don’t have Google Search box in Fx 1.5 or 2.0 (I use both on different machines). I do not allow Google any cookies ever. I always type “www.google.com” in the Fx address bar to go the the main Google page where I do a search. Today, I started getting that horrid Google Suggest. That is extremely irritating and I want it gone. How do I get rid of it when I am on the regular Google search page and Google has no cookie from me? There is a place to make it disappear at the bottom of each suggestion list, but that is not much help. I don’t want to see it at all!

I also started today to see suggestions at the top of the page when search results are returned. I have never seen that before either. How do I get rid of that?

I have CustomizeGoogle extension for Firefox and use the Proxomitron with Sidki’s filters but this junk is not being stopped by either. (I had to get new Proxo filters two days ago for the ads which Google changed and now bleed through Proxo without brand new just written filters. Evidently Google decided to try and force GoogleSuggest again too).

I had GoogleSuggest disabled way back when Google first came out with it. I went looking tonight for how to do that again (I forgot as it has been a long time since I first disabled it). Most links on a Google search for how to do this are to pages on Google and Google Newsgroups that no longer exist and return a 404 error. I also found websites that usually have good information that link to these pages that Google has killed. Your page is so far the only site I can find with any current information about this and even you don’t discuss how to disable GoogleSuggest on http://www.google.com.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  6. Hi Mele,

Thanks for asking my help, and I hope these will solve your problem.

    Try these steps.

    1. Click ‘Tools’ on your Firefox browser
    2. Go to ‘Options’
    3. In the ‘Options’ window click the Privacy tab.
    4. Then uncheck the box for ‘Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar’
    5. Click the OK button.

  8. Thanks, but I have always had that option unchecked in Firefox. (I’m kind of a privacy “nut”). I have no cache on Firefox not that I can see how that could affect this.

I don’t get GoogleSuggest every search and some searches that I think are common don’t produce it. Right after I wrote the above comment, I didn’t get it at all on any search for almost 24 hours. Just now, I got it for several searches. It’s driving me nuts when I start getting it. I get it now for EVERY search. The FIRST LETTER I type produces suggestions! I typed “a” and a bunch of suggestions. I typed b, c, d, e each as an individual search and stopped after e and each letter produced a bunch of suggestions. Then I typed “Win” and got a bunch of suggestions which changed to a bunch of others when I added “dows 7″ to the “Win”.

But, I wrote the above paragraph and then opened a new tab to http://www.google.com and typed “e” and nothing happened. I typed “a” and nothing happened. Two minutes earlier both those produced a bunch of suggestions. I did nothing different other than opening one tab and then closing it and then opening another one and going to Google. Each time I typed in the google address. I wonder if every so many times one visits Google they get the Googlesuggest but not the other times?

  12. I just found you through a Google search for this. I can’t see a way to turn it off – it’s worrying, as it means that Google is presumably even recording the things that you type in the search box – even if you don’t officially submit. And to do this while deleting all evidence of Google Suggest from most of their website (even the main Suggest FAQ!) is odd. Until I remembered the ‘Suggest’ tag, I couldn’t find it mentioned *anywhere*. It’s like they pretend it doesn’t even exist!
Just my two cents – I’m off to try and find a workaround. I’ll post if I find one, but not looking too hopeful right now!
