“Fades In” Effect of Google Homepage
Have you noticed the minimalist and clean look of Google’s Homepage recently? Well, if you don’t use Google as a search engine frequently, you would never really have spotted the small difference that the Google team had just came up with.
There’s really nothing extraordinary with regards to the new homepage. What you’ll only see is the Google logo, the search box, the Google Search button, and the I’m Feeling Lucky button.
Google developed this feature because they want to remove distractions for those users who just want to use the page solely to search the web. But, for those who are interested to use the other applications, users will just have to move the mouse and the additional links will be revealed, in a “fades in” effect.
There were approximately 10 variants of the fade-in that were tried and tested before the launching of this new Homepage. The variant that was chosen and launched was positive or neutral on all key metrics except for one-time to first action. Many users will find this odd because Google is all about user satisfaction and getting to the page or application the fastest way possible.
Here’s what Google have to say:
“We want users to notice this change… and it does take time to notice something (though in this case, only milliseconds!). Our goal then became to understand whether or not over time the users began to use the homepage even more efficiently than the control group and, sure enough, that was the trend we observed.”
